What is a Common Law Marriage?

There are about a dozen states that recognize common law marriages. Under a common law marriage jurisdiction, a man and a woman is considered married if they agree to enter into a legal marital relationship, cohabit, and hold themselves as husband and wife to the community. No ceremony is required to procure a common law marriage.
